Week 8: Group Seminar:Internet of Things (IoT) and its application in the environment

Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in Ireland, we started to teach online from mid March, so this week we started the video group Seminar on zoom.

This week's group seminar is hosted by Mary, Chidi and Liam. The theme is Internet of things (IOT) and its application in the environment.

First, Mary talked about the concept of the Internet of things, then about air quality and its impact on our lives and the surrounding environment. She also presents ideas for self-made readers and the facts that these readers can build and use.

Next Liam talked about the Internet of things and its application in sustainable agriculture. He explained how agriculture accounts for 32% of all greenhouse gases in Ireland. Then he went on to talk about the environmental benefits of organic agriculture over traditional agriculture, which maintains biodiversity and replenishes soil fertility. Liam also talked about an open source device called quick carbon, which generates soil carbon data and measures the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Finally, Chidi talked about the Internet of things related to oil, gas and leak detection. Chidi provided us with a case study of Oya lake, Nigeria, which occurred in 2008 and was not cleared until 2013. He would like to see the integration of existing technology and IOT technology to provide better security and pipeline monitoring.

After a five minute break, we were divided into groups. We used murals, which are office tools that can help us work together. Neasa, Gabriela, kruthi and I are members of a team. Our team leader is Gabriela. We must redesign the windows to make them more environmentally friendly.

We are brainstorming and agree that windows are weather responsive and will receive information from weather forecasts on a regular basis. When it rains, the windows can be turned over and the flowers in the room can be moved to the outside. When the sun is very strong, the permeability of the glass can be changed through the remote control. In just 20 minutes, we have a new idea almost every minute. We all enjoy the fun of brainstorming.

This is our first online class, although everyone is in their own home, but our learning atmosphere has not changed at all, or particularly positive.
